Tony Roma’s Gluten Free Ribs and Pulled Pork (a review)

Okay y’all, let me start off by saying that I am SO very sorry for my unplanned leave of absence. I have a good excuse . . . promise! I moved, and then Comcast was all: “What? We can’t get you internet until August 9th.” Which was good in the sense that it gave me some time to pack, but bad because it kept me from blogging.

So, you may be wondering, “Where’d ya move to?” And I have your answer right here:Rome, GA-13Just in case the picture isn’t loading for y’all . . . I moved back to Rome, GA! I’m super excited to have a new place to tackle Gluten Free living, and am looking forward to re-acclimating to life here in Rome after a few years away. Enough moving stuff! Let’s get to our review, shall we?

Rupari Foods distributes Tony Roma’s Gluten Free Ribs and Pulled Pork, and sent me some products to try and review for y’all! 😀

Here’s what I received:

IMG_4684

Their World Famous Baby Back Pork Ribs, and Signature Pulled Pork. Both of which are free from both gluten and high fructose corn syrup.

Let’s begin our review with the ribs . . .

There were 12 ribs in the rack of ribs. Preparation was super simple, just put them in the oven on a foil lined baking sheet, and brush with sauce a few times throughout the cooking:

IMG_4698

After removing from the oven, all you have to do is split into servings, and enjoy!

IMG_4708

They were really moist, almost to the point of falling off the bone, which makes an already messy eating process messier. Oh well! They make sinks for a reason, right? The mess factor is one thing that’s kind of classic when eating ribs anyways, so it was to be expected.

As for the flavor, the sauce is a bit on the ketchupy side, which was not my favorite. In my opinion, there just wasn’t enough dimension to the flavor, and it could’ve used a bit more spice. However, if you’re not a fan of spicy barbecue, these might just be what you’ve been looking for.

The pulled pork was my favorite by far. As with the ribs, preparation was quite simple. Remove from package, heat on stovetop. So easy that I almost made Ava (see photo below) cook it. 😉

IMG_4491Anyways, after it’s heated clear through, you can eat it plain, or put it on a bun/ toast and make a Pulled Pork Sandwich. I toasted two pieces of my favorite Gluten Free bread, and made a sandwich:

IMG_4676The flavor is awesome, it had the smoky/spicy component I missed from the ribs, and was just over all really yummy. The sauce is really good, flavorful but not overpowering. I liked that I could still taste the meat, not just sauce . . . a common flaw in preprepared barbecue.

As for the texture, it was a bit on the mushy side for me. But, I accidentally let it go a minute or two longer than directed, so it may have been my error . . . not the product’s.

I was very impressed by the quality of Tony Roma’s products, and while I’m unsure about the ribs, I’d definitely buy the pulled pork in the future.

I hope y’all found this review helpful. As usual, all opinions expressed within this article are mine and mine alone, regardless of how nice it was to get the products for free.

I hope y’all are having a wonderful week, and promise to see y’all back here sooner rather than later!

Upcoming Gluten Free Products!

So, after my brief sabbatical due to illness . . . I have returned to the blogosphere to share some AWESOME news with y’all!!

There’s a new cereal coming to join the Gluten Free Community, y’all!! Do you recognize the cereal in the picture below?

That’s right . . . Lucky Charms are going Gluten Free!! 🙂

Let’s be honest though, we all are WAY more excited about these:

Than the actual cereal. Lol.

If you want to read more of the logistics, read General Mills official announcement here.

According to the announcement, they will be available labelled Gluten Free by September, which I find quite exciting, because Lucky Charms are always fun on occasion.

Have a Tremendous Thursday y’all!

CVS Gluten Free Product Find

I was at CVS yesterday to pick up cough medicine because . . . #SickGirlProblems, and while there realized I hadn’t eaten yet, and went off to their snack area with SUPER low expectations of finding anything Gluten Free when I stumbled upon these:

IMG_4535

And I was really impressed. They’re super tasty, make an awesome snack, and they’re Certified Gluten Free! So, if you have a CVS near you . . . try these out!

Have a Super Saturday y’all!

Crab Salad (a recipe!)

Today I’m going to share a recipe with y’all for Crab Salad!photo 2-3Typically, any recipe with imitation crab is totally off limits because imitation crab regularly has wheat or other glutinous fillers, but there is a company that makes Gluten Free imitation crab which is what I used to make this recipe!

This recipe is perfect for a spread with crackers (I served it with Aldi LiveGfree Crackers) like you see below, or on a sandwich like you see above which is composed of half of an Udi’s Plain Bagel, Crab Dip, 1 Sliced Cherry Tomato, 4 rings of Banana Pepper, and some Kale!

photo 1-3

To make your Crab Salad, you will need:

  • 6 ounces Gluten Free imitation crab, chopped (I pulsed it in my food processor a few times.)
  • 8 ounces (1 brick) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

Throw everything in your food processor, and pulse until combined. Transfer into a bowl, and chill for about two hours. Serve with crackers, fresh veggies, or use as a spread!

As usual, all products mentioned in this post were purchased by me, I’m just sharing them with y’all because I truly like them.

Have a Marvelous Monday y’all!!

Gluten Free Products might be hiding near you!

62519450

Do you ever feel like the picture above? Do you feel like finding a bag of Gluten Free Flour under $10 is impossible? You do? Well, I have one more question for you: Do you live in a city with diverse shopping options such as Ethnic Markets? If so, there are probably Gluten Free Deals hiding in places you’ve NEVER thought to look!

If you have an Ethnic Market in your town, (Asian or Middle Eastern are your best bets) . . . then there is a VERY high likelihood that you’re driving by savings on a regular basis.

You see, most of these markets stock rice flour, tapioca starch, and glutinous rice flour (Don’t be scared by the name, there’s no gluten. It’s actually sweet rice flour, which is also called glutinous rice flour because it has the elastic properties of gluten without the . . . gluten.) Additionally, some Middle Eastern Markets may have Sorghum Flour, though I have yet to stop in at my local market and check.

Here’s what we found last time we were at our local Asian Market:

IMG_3173I’ll post close ups in just a second, but from left to right there’s Tapioca Starch, Rice Flour, Glutinous Rice Flour (Sweet Rice Flour), and another brand of Rice Flour, because why not try two? 😉

Now, let’s talk about pricing. What are the savings in shopping at a store that’s not Kroger, Walmart, or even Amazon? Well, let me show you!

First off we have Tapioca Starch:

IMG_3174I got a pound of it at my local Asian Market for around $2.50. You can also find it on Amazon for $8.99 PLUS $1.98 shipping! If you buy it at a market near you, you’d save about $8.50.

But, there’s one more calculation I’m going to throw out for y’all. If you bought the same amount (16 oz) of Tapioca Starch on Amazon from Bob’s Red Mill it would be $6.40, and I paid $2.50 for what I bought. That’s a total savings of $3.90, minus the shipping — only free with a $35 purchase.)

Next up we’ve got . . . Rice Flour #1!

IMG_3175

One pound was $2 locally. It’s available on Amazon in a six pack for $9.16 PLUS $7.50 shipping, which totals out to around $2.75 per bag. By purchasing it locally, I saved $0.75!

If you bought the same amount (16 oz.) of White Rice Flour from Bob’s Red Mill on Amazon instead, it would end up around $5.50. I would have saved $3.50 (not including shipping)

The Glutinous Rice Flour is up next. Here’s the close up:

IMG_3176It was around $2.50 for a pound, and it is $5.51 (not including shipping) on Amazon. I saved $3.01.

Had I bought the same amount (16 oz) of Bob’s Red Mill Sweet Rice Flour, it would have been about $6.00. I would have saved $3.50 (not including shipping)

Last up, we’ve got Rice Flour #2!

IMG_3177This one was more expensive than the first, at $2.50 for a pound. On Amazon it’s currently $5.49 (with free shipping on orders over $35). I saved $2.99, not including shipping.

In comparison, if you buy White Rice Flour from Bob’s Red Mill it’d be about $5.50 (not including shipping). You’d save at least $3.00 by shopping locally. Pretty great deals, if you ask me.

So, how much did I save overall?

Well, assuming I had other items and got the last two items with free shipping on Amazon, I saved $15.25 by purchasing these products at my local Asian Market!

Had I bought the same products from Bob’s Red Mill (assuming they had one pound packages, and I had other things to buy and got free shipping through Amazon) I’d have saved $10.43 by going to my local Asian Market instead.

Regardless of what I would have purchased on Amazon, I saved between $10 and $15 by purchasing products locally. I’m going to count that as a win in my book!

What are some ways y’all save money while eating Gluten Free? Do you have any stores you frequent to get better deals? If so, please share!! You can comment below, or jot me a note on the contact tab below the title of this blog!

Hope you’ve had a Marvelous Monday, y’all!

Ardenne Farm Cinnamon Crunch Muffins

While I was walking around the GFAF Expo, I was offered a free Ardenne Farm product to review for y’all. I said yes, because I’m always looking for new Gluten Free products to review for y’all. So, without further ado . . . a review of Ardenne Farm Cinnamon Crunch Muffins!!
IMG_3576I made them Vegan by using 1/2 cup of applesauce instead of eggs, vanilla almond milk, and coconut oil instead of butter. You can see those items in the picture below, as well as the crumb topping (white package) and the muffin mix (clear package):

IMG_3582

After I pulled them out of the oven, I put them on a cooling rack for a couple minutes. And they turned out quite pretty if you ask me! 🙂

IMG_3586

As for the taste of the muffins, they were delicious. They had great flavor, and the crumb topping added additional emphasis to the cinnamon flavor. Texturally, they were moist and fluffy, with the crumb topping adding a nice crunch.

I got the chance to sample a few other Ardenne Farm products at the expo, including their Sugar Cookie, and Oatmeal Cookie Mixes which were both very tasty.

  • All of their mixes are vegan, and contain no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.
  • Their products are all Certified Gluten Free, and are tested to ensure they contain less than 10ppm of gluten.
  • All of their products made in a tree nut and peanut free facility.

Overall, I’ve really liked everything I’ve tried from Ardenne Farm, and would totally recommend their products to y’all!

Have a great day!!

New Gluten Free Product Find!!

Alrighty y’all, I went to Sam’s Club today and found a new Gluten Free Product from Krusteaz (which I searched for and couldn’t find on their website), and I thought I’d share it with y’all!! It’s Krusteaz Gluten Free All Purpose Flour!!

We paid $9.98 for five pounds of it at Sam’s today, and I’m SUPER excited to try it out!!1416185328

Here are a couple of cool factoids about it:

  • It’s Certified Gluten Free.
  • It is a blend of several flours I am already familiar with and have used in the past.

AND, my personal favorite . . .

  • It is a “cup for cup” baking mix . . . which means, just in case you didn’t know . . . you can use it in ANY recipe that’s not Gluten Free to substitute for regular flour without creating Gluten Free flour blends or any craziness like that. 😀

9710420_orig

I’m SO excited to try this over the next few days and will DEFINITELY be letting y’all know EXACTLY what I think of it!

I hope y’all have a fantastic rest of your day!

New Products from Krusteaz

Hey there! Don’t stand out there on the porch and freeze! Fall is definitely bringing a chill to the air around these parts. Y’all can come on in! 😉

“What are we chatting about today?” you ask. Well, we’re gonna discuss the new Gluten Free Krusteaz baking products! So grab your beverage of choice, and we’ll start talking about these new items  Krusteaz has recently released! 😀

Y’all got your drinks ready? Okay then, let’s look into Krusteaz’s new product line!

The product line currently has a total of four mixes, all of which are certified Gluten Free.

Double Chocolate Brownie Mix:
These are described as, “combining rich, fudge-like texture with loads of chocolate chips”
Now, I tried these at Costco when I was in Colorado, and they’re . . . just ok. Not my favorite Gluten Free brownies, but they are still yummy.

Honey Cornbread & Muffin Mix:
This sounds yummy! They describe it as being made with real honey and suggest using it in a Spicy Garden Cornbread Muffins Recipe, which I think sounds delicious.

Blueberry Muffin Mix:
I’m REALLY excited about these. I love muffins, with blueberry being one of my favorite flavors, with cranberry orange as a close second (Are ya listening, Krusteaz?)  These come with canned wild blueberries, which is a bit better than those dehydrated blueberry wannabes. . .

Buttermilk Pancake Mix:
I don’t know about y’all, but this is what I think of when it comes to Krusteaz. I grew up with pancake Saturdays, and we almost always used Krusteaz Pancake Mix which brings back fond memories. I’m hoping the Gluten Free version will elicit the same result. 🙂

I’m truly excited about this new group of products from Krusteaz, and I’m looking forward to trying the rest of them soon. I also think it’ll be interesting to see how Krusteaz expands their line within the Gluten Free community.

Now, it’s y’all’s turn to chat. Tell me which product you’re most looking forward to trying. Are you a brownie addict? A pancake fiend, or more of a cornbread and chili kind of person? Let me know in the comments below!

By the way . . . you’ll notice I’ve changed the comments section to a Disqus conversation! It’ll give us all a better way to interact. So, please try it out and let me know what you think!

Have a tremendous Thursday, y’all!
Love,
Olivia
